The Right Car For Your Teen
Randy has just turned sixteen and his father has promised him a brand new car. He could barely control his excitements on his way to the car showroom. He has already made great promises to his friends to take them for the rides. ‘I want the coolest model of car with all the latest accessories’ he told to his father, ‘I want to be a hit among my friends.’
But Allen, Randy’s father, has a different plan for his son. He wants Randy to drive a safe car, which is also cheap to insure. This conflict of interest is very common………..teens want to become popular with their peers, whereas their parents are concerned about their safety and also about the cost of insurance. Here are some shopping tips to buy the first set of wheels for your teen:
Settle for a big size car: Well, many may differ with the idea but the general trend says, ‘bigger is safer’. The big cars are likely to have greater ability to absorb impacts.
Choose a new over an old: Most of the parents feel that the ‘used car’ is the best option for their teens, but it may not be true always. Some old cars may even cost you high in terms of auto insurance premium as they lack in the latest safety features. If you can’t afford a new car, buy an old one but don’t forget to gear it up with the latest safety equipments.
Make it safe: It seems that I’m nagging over this issue for sometimes now,but it’s the most important factor. Introduce as many safety measures as you can like- the airbags (side airbags as well), power brakes and so forth.
Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen, Volvo, Nissan Sentra and Mitsubishi Lancer are some of the right choices for the teen drivers.

Insurance on teenage drivers can be outrageously expensive; especially if they have an accident. One of the best ways to lower your insurance costs for your teenage driver is to shop your rates around periodically. Also ask for discounts for good grades etc. Also have your agent price pulling your teenage driver’s car onto a separate policy. Sometimes that can save money too.
Safeco has a new product out there that basically monitors your teens driving. It’s a little big brother, but I’ll probably use it when my kids are of driving age.
